The Black Cab Comes Once Every Ten Years

Black Cab in Melbourne

Melbourne’s Black Cab are a bit of an enigma. They’ve been together for ten years, released three critically lauded (with some great overseas reviews) albums of shoegaze, psychedelic and electronic infused rock music, done European tours but are unknown to many in their own country. Possibly their sporadic live shows, which usually don’t stray far from their native city — indeed they’ve never ventured up to Brisbane in their history, may have something to do with it.  But now Black Cab who are centered around Andrew Coates’s low in the mix speak-sing vocals, synths and electronic programming and guitarist James Lee are playing Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Yay for us! Joining the core duo will be a who’s who of Australian independent musicians including Richard Andrew (Underground Lovers), Anthony Paine (High Pass Filter), Steve Law (Zen Paradox) and Alex Jarvis (Gaslight Radio, Automatic). The band are supporting the release of new upbeat, dancey and rather smashing new single “Sexy Polizei” apparently about a homicidal German highway patrolman. Well it’s the lack of being able to write speeding tickets on the Autobahn I suppose.

Joining the Cabbies in Melbourne and Brisbane will be Grand Atlantic, a Brisbane band we caught up with last year and thought that while they were “not ones to throw angular shapes they strive to find the right notes and the majority of the time they hit them” (Full Review).

Here are the dates

Friday, July 16
Oxford Art Factory, Sydney, NSW
w/Black Ryder + The Preachers

Saturday, July 17
