Versus – Gone To Earth
By Craig Smith • Jul 16th, 2010 • Category: DownloadsBands they come and bands they go, like a passing breeze you never really know when, or if, they’ll return. After an extended period of silence, ’90s New York three-piece Versus (think Yo La Tengo meet Mission of Burma), have reconvened with On the Ones and Threes, the band’s first LP (fifth total) in ten years. This time they’re back with the original 90′s line-up of Fontaine Toups, and brothers Edward and Richard Baluyut. On The Ones And Threes (released August 3) sticks close to the original Versus blueprint of loud guitars and tightly knitted harmonies, quickly establishing itself as their most impressive work to date. Merge Records have given us “Gone To Earth”, a beautiful string-filled duet of sorts between Toups and Baluyut (R) that tones down the intensity lurking in other places. Listen here.
