The Rentals – Honey Life
By Caleb Rudd • Jul 8th, 2010 • Category: DownloadsRemember The Rentals? In 1995 Matt Sharp, then Weezer’s bassist, formed a group which amalgamated sweet male-female harmonies, new wave moog synths and violins for the stunning Return of the Rentals. A follow-up LP in 1999 lacked focus and The Rentals seemingly called it a day, until 2005 which saw the them return for live dates and an EP. Every day of 2009 was visually documented while recording three Songs About Time EPs and the end result is now available in three formats – a ltd edition deluxe edition (42 tracks on vinyl/CD, artbooks, DVDs, rolls of film etc – so much swag it makes the “say it ain’t so” price of $275 almost charitable), a cut down deluxe edition ($125) and 12 track “best of” digital download ($10). A song from the deluxe editions “Honey Life” is available for free at RCRD LBL and is classic Rentals, featuring a world weary performance from Sharp — “And yes this world is full of pain/And that pain is on parade/You know I never really liked parades anyway“.
