Beach House – I Don’t Care For The Winter Sun

Christmas songs. There’s a special place in hell for the person who invented them. Wait, let’s try that again. Christmas songs. Who doesn’t love them? Even your favourite indie bands are getting into the spirit. There’s no point naming names, the guilty parties are out there, roasting chestnuts, asking their baby to please come home, and as if that’s not enough, the synth-pop band that lives below Webcuts HQ recorded their own Christmas cover and listening to their repeated “It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas!” yelps was more tinselled torture than one could bear. Thankfully, there are bands out there whose idea of a Christmas song avoids such trappings. Baltimore Teen Dream-er’s Beach House have thrown their world weary Christmas hat in with an original tune called “I Do Not Care For The Winter Sun” as a free download and you can get it here.

• Crystal Castles go disco (mutated to CC standards but still disco) on “Sad Eyes”, the third track taken from their third album (III). The clip for “Sad Eyes” features live footage of the band performing mixed with shots of Alice Glass lip-syncing along and other randomness. The melodic synth lines of the track screams ABBA (no, seriously), and is another departure from the screaming and soundsystem destroying sonic meltdowns that Crystal Castles are notable for. Having just caught the band on tour in Australia last week, they were on their usual deafening form, working the writhing masses into a frenzy. Life’s got to be a gas in that band, I tell you.
